Private Chauffeur Day Trips from Cannes — French Riviera Guide

7 unmissable destinations from Cannes by private chauffeur: Èze, Grasse, Monaco, Nice, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Antibes, Gorges du Verdon. Distances, durations, practical tips.

Why choose a private chauffeur for day trips from Cannes?

The French Riviera is meant to be explored beyond La Croisette. The winding mountain roads above the sea, the hilltop villages, the art museums tucked into medieval fortresses — none of this is accessible from a sun lounger.

A rental car seems logical, until the first impossible parking situation in Èze Village, or the Monaco one-way streets that defeat every GPS. Until the lunch in Antibes where you would have liked a second glass of rosé. A private chauffeur removes every one of those friction points. You set the itinerary and the pace. Your driver handles everything else.

Èze — A village suspended above the sea

From Cannes: 50 km, 45–55 minutes.

At 429 metres above the Mediterranean, Èze Village clings to a limestone cliff between Nice and Monaco. The view from the exotic gardens of the ruined château is among the most spectacular on the Riviera. The medieval village is pedestrian-only — park impossibly far below, or arrive by chauffeur and let him wait while you explore. The Fragonard perfumery here offers demonstrations of traditional fragrance creation.

Tip: pair Èze with Monaco — just 15 minutes further along the Moyenne Corniche for an ideal half-day circuit.

Grasse — The world capital of perfume

From Cannes: 17 km, 25–35 minutes.

Grasse is the closest destination on this list — and possibly the most underrated. Listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage since 2018 for its perfume-making tradition, it hosts three historic fragrance houses (Fragonard, Molinard, Galimard) all offering free distillery tours. The covered market on Wednesday mornings is one of the finest in the Provençal hinterland. In May, the rose fields in bloom around Grasse produce a scent found nowhere else on earth.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence — Art in a medieval village

From Cannes: 33 km, 35–45 minutes.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is the artists' village of the French Riviera. Chagall, Léger, Calder and Miró all lived or worked here. The Fondation Maeght — a few minutes' walk from the ramparts — is one of Europe's finest modern art museums. The building itself, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, is a work of art. Permanent collections include Giacometti, Miró, Calder and Braque. Allow two hours minimum.

Tip: avoid summer weekends. Midweek from March to June, the village is entirely different.

Antibes — The Mediterranean without pretension

From Cannes: 11 km, 15–25 minutes.

Antibes sits just 11 kilometres from Cannes but has an entirely different character — more genuine, less performative. The Cours Masséna market runs every morning except Monday. The Picasso Museum, housed in the Château Grimaldi where Picasso worked in autumn 1946, holds a unique collection from that prolific period. The terrace looks directly out to sea — one of the most striking museum settings in France.

Monaco — Another country, another world

From Cannes: 50 km, 45–60 minutes.

Monaco is not a city. It is a sovereign state of 2 km², the second smallest in the world, wedged between France and the sea. The old town on the Rock houses the Prince's Palace (Changing of the Guard at 11:55 AM sharp), the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III are buried, and the remarkable Oceanographic Museum founded by Prince Albert I. The Casino de Monte-Carlo, designed by Charles Garnier of Paris Opera fame, is one of the finest Belle Époque buildings in Europe — open to visitors even without gambling.

Tip: plan a full day. Monaco requires time. Your chauffeur navigates the restricted zones and one-way streets that defeat even local GPS systems.

Nice — The Riviera's capital city

From Cannes: 33 km, 30–45 minutes.

Nice is the fifth largest city in France and the capital of the Côte d'Azur. The Old Town — a baroque labyrinth of coloured facades and winding streets — is best explored on foot. The Cours Saleya flower and food market runs every morning except Monday. The Matisse Museum and Chagall Museum are both world-class, located 20 minutes from the seafront. The Castle Hill, accessible by elevator from the Promenade des Anglais, offers a 360° panorama over the Baie des Anges. Free entry.

Gorges du Verdon — Europe's Grand Canyon

From Cannes: 100 km, 1h30–1h45.

The Gorges du Verdon are the ultimate full-day excursion from Cannes. Europe's largest canyon — 25 km long, up to 700 metres deep — changes colour throughout the day: emerald green at the bottom, ochre and white on the limestone walls, azure blue from the viewpoints above. The classic route is the Route des Crêtes (D23), following the northern rim for 23 km with mandatory stops every kilometre. Allow 3 hours without rushing.

Tip: this excursion cannot reasonably be done by taxi. Your chauffeur stops at the viewpoints you choose, waits during your hike, and drives you back to Cannes so you don't have to navigate 3 hours after a full day outdoors.
